It's the economy that matters now that the Fed is off the sidelines - CNBC

Markets Thursday will give more than a glancing look at one of the last big batches of economic data this year, now that the Fed has signaled it could speed up interest rate hikes.

The Fed on Wednesday raised its short-term target rate by 25 basis points in its second rate hike in a year. The Fed also surprised markets with a forecast that showed it could raise rates three times next year, instead of two.

"I think we're moving into a healthier environment where the economic data matters. You have a Fed that is certainly watching global growth and watching inflation around the world," said Rick Rieder, CIO of global fixed income at BlackRock.

Data Thursday includes CPI inflation data, jobless claims, the Empire Fed survey and Philadelphia Fed survey, all at 8:30 a.m. ET. There is also Markit manufacturing PMI at 9:45 a.m., NAHB homebuilder sentiment at 10 a.m., and Treasury capital flow data, at 4 p.m.

Bond yields spiked Wednesday afternoon, the dollar soared and stocks sold off hard on the prospect of more rate hikes. The dollar index rose more than 1 percent and the euro fell to $1.05. The market will watch the greenback since a rising dollar can be a negative for corporate profits.

Market chatter Wednesday immediately jumped to the possibility that the Fed could raise rates even more than its forecast, once the tax plans and fiscal spending programs proposed by President-elect Donald Trump are instituted.

Rieder said the plans to cut corporate taxes could be a positive for the economy, and the business surveys are picking up. "I'm on the enthusiastic side. I think growth is going to be better than people think, and if you get that, the Fed will react to it," Rieder said.

The two-year Treasury yield, which is most sensitive to the Fed, rose to 1.27 percent Wednesday, its highest level in seven years. The 10-year jumped to 2.57 percent.

"I certainly think we could hit a 3 (percent 10-year yield) by the first quarter of the year," said Rieder. The 10-year was last at 3 percent in January 2014. He said the yield could reach 2.75 percent before the end of this year, but after the 10-year reaches 3 percent it may not have that much further to go.

Stocks were slammed Wednesday, and even the financial sector, which is helped by higher interest rates, sold off. The Dow fell 118 points, to 19,792, and the S&P 500 dropped 18 to 2,253.

"Going into this, there were so many questions about what could the Fed say that could be a road block to Dow 20,000. I guess the Fed was more hawkish than the market had wanted even though Janet Yellen at the press conference basically said we're data dependent, and we don't know what the future holds in terms of stimulus and tax cuts," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial. "She said the economy was resilient and she was much more positive than she has been. She used the word gradual a couple of times. The market was hoping she'd use that word more. This was one where the market in a sense was already moving toward a pullback."

Krosby said the market has history on its side, and next week could be a good one for stocks. "I think you're going to see buyers coming in on this dip," she said. Krosby said she expects to see buying interest in the financial names.

"Next week happens to be the sweet spot for the market in terms of performance. Statistically next week seems to be the week in which if you haven't caught up in your performance, if you're a hedge fund or portfolio manager, you're going to use that week to make that performance. There's nothing [Yellen] said that should have made this market nervous. I think the market was poised for a pullback. We saw the dollar move markedly higher, which isn't something you want, and yields are rising," said Krosby.

Clinton Rips Trump for 'Golf Course Promotions' and 'Birther' Flip-Flop

Hillary Clinton on Saturday praised President Barack Obama for being a "great American" while again ripping into Donald Trump for leading the "birther" movement against him.

"I know I speak for not just everyone in this room, but so many tens of millions of Americans," Clinton said during a pointed speech at the Congressional Black Caucus gala in Washington, D.C., "Mr. President, not only do we know you are an American. You are a great American. And you make us all proud to be Americans, too.

The Democratic presidential candidate, delivering her first remarks since the Republican presidential nominee conceded Obama was born in the U.S., praised the President and his family for representing the country with class, grace and integrity.

"As Michelle said," Clinton continued, quoting what First Lady Michelle Obama said on Friday in response to Trumps attacks on her husband, "When others go low, we go high."

Speaking later about the stakes in the election, Clinton quipped, it is not about golf course promotions or birth certificates.

It comes down to who will fight for the forgotten, who will invest in our children, and who will really have your back in the white house, she added.

On Friday afternoon, Trump finally conceded that Obama was indeed born in the United States, as his birth certificate says. Trump did not apologize or answer any questions about his sudden change.

Trump made the announcement during a press conference at his new Washington, D.C., hotel, where he did not take any questions from the press.

10 simple rules for finding and keeping great technology talent - ZDNet

Let's face it, when it comes to hiring technology talent, you're not just competing with the company down the block or with your nearest industry competitor. You're competing with everybody, everywhere.

Worse yet, corporate IT shops are competing with the likes of Google, Apple and Amazon, who are scooping up talent right and left to keep their behemoth operations humming and innovating.

Perhaps even more challenging, corporate IT shops are also competing with a startup culture, which probably is more risky for some, but yet offers excitement and opportunities do build exciting new things.

Harvard Business Review Analytics Research just published guidelines on how to compete in this space, based on interviews with CIOs from government, nonprofit, manufacturing, and education. "Each of these CIOs have had to get creative to find new approaches to today's most common talent struggles," the report notes.

Some key takeaways:

Encourage employees to feel they're part of something greater than themselves: "A common theme that emerged from these CIO interviews is that culture is key," according to Jim Whitehurst, CEO of Red Hat, which sponsored the HBR report. "Finding solutions to these talent issues begins with a culture that empowers people by connecting them to an organization's larger mission."

Make things interesting: Your best developer may be getting tempted by a bunch of friends launching a startup. Give him or her the opportunity to make a difference at your workplace. Open up the gates and support efforts to explore and build with cloud, microservices and containers. Strive to support development of a digitally savvy, analytocs-driven enterprise.

Use social media to cultivate networks: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn provide ways to quickly identify and connect with talent.

Don't overlook good old-fashioned in-person networking. Face-to-face connections still forge the most powerful connections of all.

Become involved in open-source communities. These are wellsprings of greatly committed and highly proficient technologists.

Encourage and tap into diversity. This not only includes people from all different communities and backgrounds, but diverse professional perspectives as well.

Look to contingent or non-traditional labor: This not only includes contract staff, but also crowdsourcing and hackathons to stir innovation and get things done.

Invest in coaching, mentoring, training: Technology changes from year to year, and today's solutions may be tomorrow's legacy systems. For IT professionals, the challenge is to be able to do their regular day-to-day jobs, while trying to also keep up with learning new technologies, Employers can help by allocating paid time for onsite learning, as well as funding training programs.

Hire less for skills and more for emotional maturity and the ability to learn and change: Again, with technology changing so fast, what matters more is willingness to adapt and contribute than being a skills guru.

Smash the hierarchy. Run the organization with collaborative teams, not a top-down command-and-control structure.

At Harlem's Apollo, Bernie Sanders Slams the Clintons on Poverty and Race - New York Times

10:33 pm ET10:33 pm ET By Yamiche Alcindor10:33 pm ET10:33 pm ETYamiche AlcindorPhotoSenator Bernie Sanders of Vermont at a campaign event on Saturday at the Apollo Theater in New York.Credit Sam Hodgson for The New York TimesBernie Sanders on Saturday night called on former President Bill Clinton to apologize for drowning out protesters who confronted him about his administrations role in incarcerating large numbers of black people and about Hillary Clintons use of the term super predator.

At a campaign event in Harlems Apollo Theater, which ended with a protester interrupting the Vermont senator with anti-Semitic remarks, Mr. Sanders was asked about Mr. Clintons recent confrontation with Black Lives Matter protesters over the term used by Hillary Clinton in 1996 to describe gang members.

Mr. Clinton had faced harsh backlash earlier this week for speaking over demonstrators chants at a rally in Philadelphia by aggressively defending his actions while in office.

Unacceptable, Mr. Sanders said to loud applause. I think we all know what that term meant in the context that it was said years ago. We know who they were talking about.

As the senator spoke, an audience member shouted, Black people.

Thats exactly right, Mr. Sanders replied. And I think that the president owes the American people an apology for trying to defend the indefensible.

Mr. Sanders has repeatedly attacked Mrs. Clinton for supporting a 1994 crime bill that her husband signed into law and which created tougher penalties for nonviolent drug offenders, erected dozens of new prisons, banned certain types of assault weapons and sent 100,000 more police officers to American cities.

At Saturdays event, Mr. Sanders sat alongside some of his most famous black supporters, including actor Harry Belafonte and Nina Turner, the former Ohio senator, and Erica Garner, the daughter of Eric Garner, the Staten Island man who died during an arrest after police officers placed him in a choke hold.

Mr. Sanders offered a personal reason for being interested in issues of racism.

I think most of you know, Im Jewish, he said. I can remember as a kid, tears coming down my eyes knowing that much of my fathers family was wiped out by a lunatic in Germany.

As the event ended, John Prince, 32, used Mr. Sanderss heritage to interrupt the event.

As you know, the Zionist Jews and I dont mean to offend anybody they run the Federal Reserve, they run Wall Street, they run every campaign, Mr. Prince said.

Mr. Sanders frowned, held up his hand, and began shaking his head. Brother, brother, brother, he said.

But, Mr. Prince went on: What is your affiliation to your Jewish community? Thats all Im asking.

Thats not what youre asking, Mr. Sanders said, before explaining that he was a strong defender of Israel but that people needed to also pay attention to the needs of the Palestinians.

Eventually, Mr. Prince began shouting over Mr. Sanders and walked off as Symone Sanders, the national press secretary for the Sanders campaign, invited him to speak with her. The two later talked, but Mr. Prince continued to shout about Jews buying properties across New York.

Earlier in the event, Mr. Sanders took questions about improving the lives of people of color and reforming the criminal justice system. He also criticized Mr. Clinton for signing into law the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act.The senator said that bill, a welfare reform act, hurt many Americans and was born out of misinformed stereotypes.

The premise, which was a right-wing Republican premise, was that the problem was that all of these poor people were really living high off the hog, Mr. Sanders said. There were all the quote unquote welfare queens, remember that? All these poor people just living so well on welfare. That bill was passed and the result of it was poverty for the poorest of the poor went up very significantly in our country.

Mr. Sanders said if elected president he would put an end to the mentality that beating up on the poor is a good way to win votes.

Mr. Belafonte followed that up by saying the country had already seen what damage a Clinton presidency would do to the country.

I will just say, Hillary who? Mr. Belafonte said, pausing as many in the crowd cheered. We have been there and done that. Today is a new day. Bernie Sanders.

HVAC? This Article Has The Tips You Need

Facilities Maintenance will help you. HVAC is a subject that a lot of people want to know about, but they don't know where to get some advice. Thankfully for you, this article is full of great guidelines to help you out. You should continue reading to learn more if this sounds like something you're interested in.

If you must hire someone to help you out with your HVAC system, be sure to learn about all of the requirements your state has legislated regarding licencing and insurance. If they meet these requirements before you hire them, you need to be able to ask anyone you plan to hire.

Do you hear a clicking sound when your fan is turning? This may mean that there is something in the way of the blades of the fan. You must replace it, just unbending it will leave the fan unbalanced and can cause further issues, if it gets so bad that the blade bends.

Clean the fan coils and blades on the condenser fan every spring. Shut off the power to ensure that none of the parts will move while you work on it, before you do so. Secondly, pop the grill off, take the blades off and clean them as well as the actual unit.

Before you hire anyone to do any work on your HVAC, be sure to get a written estimate which has itemized costs listed on it. This will ensure that comparing one contractor to another will be simple as you can see what one offers that another doesn't, or what price they're charging for the same items.

Don't get grass clippings on your outside unit. Turn your lawnmower in the opposite direction. This also applies to leaf blowing and any other yard work that results in debris.

Ask for references and be sure to call them as well. You are dealing with a high ticket item here, so you'll want to do your due diligence to make sure you are getting the best for your money. Ask for references, but don't stop there. Call each reference to check. A lot of people don't take that important last step.

It is very important that your HVAC system is serviced two times a year. The normally recommended time for HVAC system inspections is once before the peak cooling season when it gets hot and you'll be using your AC, and once before the peak heating season, during the cold months when you're likely to be using your heat. Even if everything seems fine, check things out to find potential problems.

In the winter, wearing layers can save you a ton of money on your utility bill. You can see significant savings on your next bill when it arrives if you can install a digital thermostat that makes the house cooler when you're asleep and warmer just before you get up.

Consider window air conditioners for your home if you are thinking about installing a central unit. Do you really need to cool your kitchen overnight? Do you have multiple floors with only one housing bedrooms? To efficiently and cheaply cool only where people are actually staying, window units are a great choice.

Look for leaks in the ducts if your system isn't working right. You can call a utility company in your area to help you with testing, and that doesn't cost much or nothing at all usually. Once you fix the leaks, the savings will be more than worth the hassle.

To run your HVAC at full efficiency, you must have efficient doors and windows in place as well. Each of these should have an airtight seal on them. Ask a contractor to test them for you.

Think about installing a digital programmable thermostat to keep your cooling and heating bills low. These digital thermostats have timers that allow you to completely control your HVAC use. You can set the cooling and heat to only turn on when you are home and to turn off when you are at work.

Consider painting the outside of your home in a light color to reflect heat if you live in a hot climate. If your summers are cool, use a dark color to instead heat up your home in the winter. This simple change can end up saving you a lot on your utility bills.

Think about installing a digital programmable thermostat to keep your cooling and heating bills low. These digital thermostats have timers that allow you to completely control your HVAC use. You can set the cooling and heat to only turn on when you are home and to turn off when you are at work.

Have you been thinking about buying a new HVAC system? You will need to take a few things into account. The systems are generally rated based on the area they cover. Therefore, you may want to opt for a larger unit.

When looking for an HVAC company, find one that is available when you need them. Reliable companies can be reached easily at any time. This includes both day and night. A prospective company should also values your resources and time. They should be able to schedule service calls at your earliest convenience.

When buying an air conditioner, you want to find out with a SEER rating of 13 or higher. 13 is the minimum standard set by the government, so higher ratings, while not mandatory, are going to offer you better efficiency. SEER ratings can go as high as 19, so keep this in mind as you shop.

Consider a digital window air conditioner with a remote to make use easy as pie. These often come with a thermostat in the remote, turning off the unit when the air near the remote is cool enough. Place the remote on the other side of the room so that the whole area cools down.

Check the licensing of any HVAC company that you plan to hire. By making sure they are fully licensed, start. They should be in compliance with your state's business laws. Good HVAC companies should be fully insured. This is to protect their company, their employees, and their customers should anything happen when they are performing a service at the home of a customer.

No one enjoys working with a malfunctioning HVAC unit. The process becomes much simpler if proper research is done prior to situations that demand attention. By remembering the advice found here, it is possible for any homeowner to solve any issues quickly and at a reasonable cost.
